Riley Boykin Smith, the grandson of the founder of
Tensaw Land & Timber Co., Inc., has served as
President and CEO of the Company since 1988.
Riley grew up in Mobile and graduated from the
University Military School in 1967. He went on to
obtain his B.S. in Commerce and Business
Administration from the University of Alabama in
1972. After graduation, he worked with his father’s
residential real estate development company, Riley
Smith, Inc., until he joined Tensaw in 1979. He
served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Company prior
to being named President and CEO in 1988.
His accomplishments outside of Tensaw include
serving in the cabinet of Governor Don Siegelman
as Commissioner of the Department of
Conservation and Natural Resources from January
1999 through January 2003. While in Montgomery,
Riley managed the operations of the Game and
Fish, Marine Resources, State Lands and State
Parks Divisions as well as the Marine Police
Department. He was responsible for more than
1,200 state employees and a budget of more than
ninety million dollars. Following that state-wide
position, Riley became a Commissioner of the
Alabama Department of Environmental
Management in 2003 and served the state in that
capacity until September of 2006.
His many charitable and conservation affiliations
include serving on the Boards of the YMCA of
Metropolitan Mobile, Inc., Wachovia Bank of Mobile,
Springhill Memorial Hospital, UMS-Wright
Preparatory School, Boys Club of Mobile, and the
Country Club of Mobile. He served as President of
the Mobile Big Game Fishing Club, the Red
Elephant Club, DKE Alumni Association, PSI
Chapter, the local chapters of Ducks Unlimited,
National Wild Turkey Federation, Coastal
Conservation Association and Alabama Wildlife
Federation. Riley was also the Chairman of the
Mobile Chapter of Ducks Unlimited and the Forever
Wild Land Trust. He served on the State Executive
Committees of the Coastal Conservation
Association, Auburn Wildlife Science Advisory
Council and the Alabama Wildlife Federation. He
continues to serve his community and is a member
of the above listed organizations as well as the
National Rifle Association, Athelstan Club,
Conservation Advisory Council.
Riley has been married to the former Tammy Lackey
of Tallassee, Alabama since 1987. They have one
daughter, Mary Frances, who followed in her
father’s footsteps by graduating from UMS-Wright
Preparatory School and the University of Alabama.
